American Virgin DVD Review

Priscilla White (Jenna Dewan) is a freshman at college who is on a scholarship from an abstinance group that tout the virture and values of saving yourself until marriage. Her boyfriend Brad (Ben Marten) is also a member of the club and both decide to save themselves while they are away at different colleges. Priscilla realizes that her pledge is going to be a little more difficult than she imagined once she meets her new college roommate “The Naz” (Brianne Davis) who has made quite a reputation as the party girl over the last several years. After Priscilla mistakenly gets drunk on Jello shots at a frat house party sponsored by the sleezy dvd empire “Chicks Go Crazy” she awakens the next morning to discover that she had indeed, gone crazy the night before and that the whole thing had been captured on film by shady producer Ed Curtzman (Rob Schneider.) Now, faced with forfeiting her scholarship and losing her boyfriend, Priscilla and The Naz team up with a pair of newfound friends to go on a roadtrip and recover the film footage before Curtzman can air it.

While not really breaking any new ground, American Virgin is a fun poke at the whole “Girls Gone Wild” phenomenon that sees college girls everywhere willing to lift their shirt for beads or a free t-shirt. Rob Schneider plays a sterotypical sleezy producer well and is the catalyst for most of the biggest laughs. There are a couple of plotpoints that are really farfetched but given the storyline, you just go with it and have a good time.

This isn’t my favorite Rob Schneider picture, although I did like it better than The Hot Chick and Big Stan, as the supporting role of sleeze-meister producer Ed Curtzman, replacing “You Can Do It!” with the new catchphrase “Chicks go crazy!” Schneider is easily the funniest actor in the film as one would expect. Jenna Dewan is ok as Priscilla White, the show’s heroine. I didn’t really buy Brianne Davis as the Naz, campus party legend. Her performance just seemed a little flat and forced.

Feeling more like an 80′s screwball comedy like Loosin’ It or My Tutor than Superbad or even American Pie, American Virgin has enough fun moments to recommend for a rental. If you are excited at the aspect of seeing the stars of the movie naked, you might be disappointed…unless you were hoping for Rob Schneider.
